Quick answer: SeaStar Power Assist adds powered hydraulic assistance to compatible SeaStar steering systems to reduce steering-wheel effort in higher-load applications. It is not a universal add-on, and Dometic specifically warns against using SeaStar Power Assist with BayStar steering cylinders.
How SeaStar Power Assist Works
A conventional SeaStar hydraulic system is manually powered by the helm. A Power Assist unit adds an electrically powered hydraulic pump into the compatible steering circuit, reducing the effort required at the wheel.
Dometic designs the system so steering remains possible if electrical assist is lost, but system behavior and steering effort can change. Installation and electrical requirements must follow the current manual.
Who Is Power Assist For?
Power Assist is most relevant where steering loads are higher or reduced steering effort is desirable, including certain:
- Large outboard applications
- Multi-engine boats
- Higher-torque steering systems
- Long operating days where driver fatigue matters
- Compatible autopilot/steering configurations
It is not an automatic requirement simply because a boat has SeaStar steering.

Important: Do Not Use SeaStar Power Assist With BayStar Cylinders
Dometic's Power Assist installation documentation explicitly warns that SeaStar Power Assist is not to be used with BayStar steering cylinders. The Power Assist system can generate pressures beyond what the BayStar cylinder is designed to handle.
If your boat has BayStar, do not assume Power Assist is a compatible upgrade path.
Standard vs. High-Pressure Power Assist
Dometic offers different Power Assist configurations for different steering systems and pressure requirements. Do not substitute a standard or high-pressure unit based only on price or availability.
Match the unit to the exact helm, cylinder, engine configuration and Dometic application requirements.
Power Assist vs. SeaStar PRO
SeaStar PRO identifies a performance steering system; it does not mean the boat has powered assistance. Dometic’s current -3 Power Assist manual lists compatibility with both SeaStar and SeaStar PRO helms. A PRO helm still requires PRO hoses, and the complete installation must satisfy the manual’s cylinder and plumbing requirements. Do not apply older -2 pump compatibility tables to a -3 unit.
Can Power Assist Work With an Autopilot?
Dometic provides specific Power Assist/autopilot plumbing guidance for compatible installations. Autopilot integration should follow the current SeaStar and autopilot manufacturer's instructions rather than generic hose routing.
First diagnose any new stiffness, binding, leaks or abnormal steering response. Power Assist should not be used to mask a fault in the existing system.
Do You Need It?
Power Assist may make sense if your compatible SeaStar system has legitimately high steering effort and the boat falls within a supported Dometic application. It may be unnecessary on a properly selected standard SeaStar system with acceptable steering effort.
