Quick answer: BayStar is Dometic's lower-horsepower hydraulic steering system for many single-outboard boats up to 150 HP. SeaStar is the broader-duty hydraulic platform for applications that fall outside BayStar's limits, while SeaStar PRO is aimed at specific high-performance single-outboard boats. The correct choice depends on more than horsepower alone.
Dometic and SeaStar products are now at PartsDuck, and this guide explains one of the most common questions we hear: SeaStar or BayStar?
SeaStar vs. BayStar at a Glance
| System | General Application | Important Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| BayStar | Many single-outboard boats up to 150 HP | Not recommended for high-performance/high-steering-load applications |
| SeaStar | Broader range of outboard hydraulic steering applications | Must match cylinder, helm and engine application correctly |
| SeaStar PRO | High-performance single, non-power-assisted outboards up to 300 HP | Application-specific; Dometic especially targets boats capable of 60+ MPH |
What Is BayStar?
Dometic positions BayStar as a more affordable hydraulic steering solution for many lower-horsepower single-outboard boats. The BayStar HK4300-4 includes a helm, compact outboard cylinder and hydraulic oil. This specific kit is supplied without tubing; select the approved plumbing separately for your installation.
Dometic's current BayStar product information says it is suitable for most single-outboard boats rated up to 150 HP, including many runabouts and inflatables. It also specifically says BayStar is not recommended for high-performance engines.
Dometic’s BayStar installation manual requires SeaStar for engines with a 4.75-inch gearcase or large-displacement engines detuned to 150 HP or less. It also advises against BayStar in high-steering-load applications such as certain pontoons and bass boats. A horsepower rating alone does not establish compatibility.

What Is SeaStar?
SeaStar is Dometic's broader hydraulic steering platform. It covers a wider range of engines, boat types, cylinders, helms, hose configurations, and performance applications than BayStar.
PartsDuck carries complete SeaStar kits as well as individual helms, cylinders, hoses and tubing, and service parts.
A common standard kit is the SeaStar HK6400-4 Hydraulic Steering Kit.
What About SeaStar PRO?
SeaStar PRO is not simply "better SeaStar" for every boat. It is a purpose-built high-performance system.
Dometic currently describes the HK7500-4 SeaStar PRO kit for high-performance boats with a single non-power-assisted outboard up to 300 HP, especially boats capable of speeds over 60 MPH. Dometic also notes compatibility with high-performance propellers and jack plates.
When BayStar Makes Sense
- Single-outboard application
- Within Dometic's horsepower limit
- Not a high-performance or unusually high-steering-load hull
- Engine/cylinder combination appears in Dometic application guidance
- You want hydraulic steering without stepping into the broader SeaStar system
When SeaStar Is the Better Choice
- Your engine or hull falls outside BayStar's application limits
- The boat generates higher steering loads
- You need a SeaStar-specific cylinder or helm configuration
- You have a performance application that calls for SeaStar or SeaStar PRO
- You are working with a multi-engine or specialized system covered by Dometic's SeaStar selection guidance
Do Not Choose by Horsepower Alone
This is the most important point in the article. A 150 HP rating does not automatically mean BayStar is correct. Boat speed, hull type, engine displacement, engine count, steering torque, mounting geometry and Dometic's current application tables all matter.
Always verify the exact engine and steering application before ordering.
