Dometic SeaStar Jack Plates: What They Do & How to Choose One

SeaStar jack plates: Standard hydraulic jack plate.

Nick Borrelli |

Quick answer: A SeaStar jack plate moves an outboard vertically relative to the transom without changing the engine's trim angle. Dometic offers manual, Standard hydraulic, Xtreme and Mega jack plates for different engine loads and performance applications.

What Does a Jack Plate Do?

A jack plate positions the outboard behind the transom and allows engine height to be adjusted. Raising or lowering the engine can help tune shallow-water capability, propeller position, water pressure, hole shot, ride and performance when the boat is correctly set up.

A jack plate is different from trim. Trim changes the engine angle. A jack plate changes vertical engine position.

What Is Setback?

Setback is the distance the jack plate positions the engine aft of the transom. Different SeaStar jack plates are offered in multiple setbacks.

More setback is not automatically better. It changes leverage, rigging geometry and steering-cylinder clearance and should be selected for the hull and engine setup.

Dometic SeaStar Jack Plate Families

Family Current Dometic Rating / Role
Manual Dometic currently lists manual plates up to 200 HP in its jack-plate overview
Standard Hydraulic Up to 300 HP gasoline outboards
Xtreme Hydraulic Up to 400 HP gasoline outboards
Mega Up to 600 HP

SeaStar Standard Hydraulic Jack Plate

Dometic rates its current Standard hydraulic jack plate up to 300 HP. It is offered in multiple setbacks and is designed to move the engine vertically under load.

SeaStar Xtreme Jack Plate

The Xtreme family uses heavier-duty construction and is currently rated by Dometic for gasoline outboards up to 400 HP.

Dometic offers Xtreme jack plates in 4-, 6-, 8-, 10- and 12-inch setbacks and describes a 5.6-inch vertical travel range.

Dometic Mega Jack Plate

The Mega family is built for today's very large outboards. Dometic rates the current Mega jack plate up to 600 HP, with standard and wide mounting-pattern versions for different engines.

Manual Jack Plates

Manual plates provide fixed-adjustment engine height rather than on-the-fly hydraulic movement. They can make sense when you want setback and height optimization without the cost and complexity of a hydraulic actuator.

Jack Plates and Steering Cylinder Clearance

This is one of the most important checks in the whole installation.

Dometic's current SeaStar cylinder instructions warn that jack plates can interfere with the steering cylinder, particularly through full engine tilt. The steering cylinder, hoses, engine, plate and transom hardware must be checked through the complete steering, trim/tilt and jack-plate operating range.

Dometic notes that tilt-stop/lift-restrictor solutions may be required in some installations.

How to Choose a SeaStar Jack Plate

  1. Confirm engine make, model, horsepower and weight.
  2. Check Dometic's model-specific HP and load limits.
  3. Determine appropriate setback for the hull and application.
  4. Check steering-cylinder and hose clearance.
  5. Confirm transom structure and mounting pattern.
  6. Consider shallow-water anchors and other transom accessories.
  7. Plan controls, wiring and position indication if applicable.

Do Jack Plates Always Make a Boat Faster?

No. A jack plate gives you another setup variable. The result depends on hull design, propeller, engine height, load, setback and water conditions. Incorrect engine height can reduce cooling-water pressure or create unsafe handling.

For a catalog example, see the SeaStar JP5040R Standard hydraulic jack plate with 4-inch setback. Confirm the hull, engine weight, mounting pattern and clearance requirements before choosing a setback.
